‘walt’ gave some details on configuring X to use DMPS, so that your monitor turns off when your console is inactive for extended periods. Good for conservation, but not as fun as the alternative.

Of course, you can enjoy the ‘best of both worlds’ by using a screensaver to warn you of the impending DPMS event. This also saves a lot of wear and tear on your CRT if you still use one, and of course is kind of necessary if you want screen locking for privacy.
