A recent commit by Michael Neumann makes qemu work, and also the “HP Compaq” (They’re using both names now?) laptop model 6710b. This apparently was a USB issue.

Technically Compaq is now just a brand of HP, so they use a formulation similar to “Apple iMac” (or “Commodore Amiga,” “IBM Aptiva,” etc.) when they want to remind people that HP is the active entity providing support.
