Living and learning. I’ve always configured on Debian machines to avoid accidental reboots, but never tried to understand why it’s called molly-guard…
host02:~# reboot
W: molly-guard: SSH session detected!
Please type in hostname of the machine to reboot: ^C
Good thing I asked; I won’t reboot host02 …
Now i know…
Legit MollyGuard naming origin?

If true, a fun bit of old computer lore. :^)
Re. foot pedal – I have something similar, although it did not any DIY.
I’m using a surplus – fortunately, I didn’t have to pay for it :^) – Philips foot control – https://www.dictation.philips.com/gb/products/transcription-accessories/foot-control-acc2300/
I didn’t have it configured for vi(1) specifically – remapped CAPS_LOCK to ESC for that ;^) – but used it for other desktop-related tasks via usbhidaction(1) – https://man.openbsd.org/usbhidaction.1 It has 4 “buttons” and is a great improvement to one’s productivity. I highly recommend it if you can get your hands on one :^)
